😵 It could be argued that getting good quality, regular sleep is just as important as diet and physical activity to ensure good health. Unfortunately, with our busy lives, bright lights, and electronic devices, we have largely disrupted natural sleeping rhythms, which is a possible contributing factor to overall bad health.

❤️ Poor sleep affects hormones that help regulate our appetite, namely ghrelin (which stimulates hunger signals) and leptin (the hormone that suppresses appetite). Studies have shown that sleep-deprived individuals often consume more total energy from food than those getting regular, good quality sleep.

🤓 GOOD sleep is amazing for brain function, specifically beneficial for cognition, performance, concentration and productivity. Poor sleep can actually impair brain function to a similar degree as alcohol intoxication, but good sleep can actually enhance our ability to solve problems and remember things better.

🍦 Sleep may play a role in glucose metabolism and the development of type 2 diabetes. A number of studies have shown that sleep deprivation affects blood sugar levels and insulin responses in the body, but getting a good night’s rest on a regular basis can do wonders for resolving this.

😃 GOOD sleep has also been shown to improve immune function, reduce long-term inflammation in the body, and prevent depression. So no matter what you think, good sleep is definitely one of the pillars of good health. You can have a great diet and exercise regularly, but without good quality sleep, your body ain’t going to be happy.
